Tooth Decay <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>By far the most common reason for a toothache is a good old-fashioned\ncavity. This occurs when bacteria feed on the particles of food in your mouth\nand create an acidic waste product that destroys enamel, or the outside layer\nof your tooth. In order for a cavity to cause pain, it must have reached the sensitive\nnext layer, called the dentin, or even the inner chamber, known as the pulp. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2. Gum Disease <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>This bacterial infection in your gums can cause an achy\nfeeling throughout your whole mouth. Additionally, sometimes it can cause your gums\nto recede from your teeth, exposing the sensitive roots of your teeth to\nharmful bacteria. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">3. Temperature Sensitivity <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>If a sharp pain shoots through your mouth during or after\neating or drinking something hot or cold, it could mean your enamel has worn\ndown and exposed the dentin. Dentin contains microscopic tubules that lead to\nthe tooth\u2019s nerves, resulting in temperature sensitivity. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">4. Damaged Fillings <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Fillings that cover grooves or fractures often protect\nvulnerable parts of a tooth. When a filling falls out or is damaged, these\nsensitive areas of the teeth are then exposed to harmful bacteria. If you have\na filling that is compromised in some way, book an appointment with your\nemergency dentist right away. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">5. Teeth Grinding <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Teeth grinding, or bruxism, involves clenching the jaw or\nviolently grinding the top and bottom teeth together, and typically happens\nwhile you\u2019re sleeping. This can wear down the teeth and damage dental work. The\nbest solution is to wear a customized mouthguard from your dentist to prevent\nyour upper and lower teeth from coming together. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">6. Improper Brushing or Flossing <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Many people believe the harder they brush and floss, the\ncleaner their teeth will be. This actually can wear down your enamel and result\nin sensitivity and even pain. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">7. Impacted Wisdom Teeth <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Impacted teeth have failed to break through the gumline, attracting bacteria and sometimes even pushing against other teeth. Orthodontic Appliances \u00a0<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Braces, retainers, and clear aligners can all cause an\naching sensation, especially when you get your braces tightened or switch to a\nnew set of aligners.
